Last weekend I travelled to NYC and Brooklyn to visit some old friends from the Appalachian Trial. We decided to see Brooklyn on bike. Starting at Carroll Gardens, we traversed through the city's streets, all the way to the beaches and bays of south Brooklyn, about 13 miles or so. The change was dramatic; from Brooklyn's "New Manhattan" neighborhoods to its subsidized housing and dilapidated streets, gentrification is definitely still present in NYC. After riding through Brooklyn, we arrived at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge where we found several miles of trail that take you through wetlands, marshes, and ponds. The bay is a mecca for birds, especially migrating birds. Due to the tidal waves, the bay not only has freshwater wetlands and ponds but brackish ones as well (mixture of salt and fresh water). As a result, throughout the year, this wildlife refuge hosts 330 different species of birds. Ospreys, thrushes, warblers, herons, wrens, terns, gulls, ibises, oystercatchers, and lots of different kinds ducks....just to name a few :) To go from big city Brooklyn to a wildlife refuge in 13 miles was quite unique and most definitely fun :)
