"With the smell of the woods, and the wind in the trees, they will forget the rush and strain of all the other long weeks of the year, and for a short time at least, the days will be good for their hearts and their souls." FDR and Shenandoah National Park dedication, July 3, 1936
"To a large degree we are trending as a nation toward becoming very homogenous, with retail chains, television and such. But the National Trails take you into the tremendous natural diversity of the country where Americans still have their own way of talking and acting, and where there continues to be a real diversity of people." Interview with Bart Smith, 10/08, professional photograher who has hiked 16,000 miles through all national parks and scenic trails.
Greetings from Harpers Ferry, WV!!!!
I've made it half-way through the Appalachian Trail! And my sister Rebecca is here to celebrate with me and walk the next sixty miles into Maryland and Pennsylvania! Good times ahead!
The above quotes summarize well my experience thusfar on the Trail :) and speak truthfully of nature's affect on humans as well. But I think what has most impressed me on the Trail is the support and encouragement I have found from the communities and individuals along the Trail. The random acts of kindness, the trail magic, the generosity, the grace, and the sense of comradery. It has reaffirmed my faith in humanity...and this is a beautiful thing my friend!
Happy July to all!
Peace and Love,
Gaucha
