From Joplin, Missouri to the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial Site. It's been a very grounding two days. The resilient recovery work that is going on in Joplin is quite inspirational. You can learn more about it at their website: joplinrecoveryfund.org

I was 11 years old when the Alfred Murrah Federal Building was bombed in Oklahoma City. 168 people were killed, 168 buildings were damaged and 16 were completely destroyed. I remember watching the news with my grandma that day on April 19, 1995. We watched on t.v. as the story unfolded, the gutted buildings, the smoke, the suspected culprits and the faces of the casualties. I didn't quite understand what was going but I recall running to their basement, overwhelmed with tears and emotions. The Memorial Site is full of respect, beauty and hope. Trees were planted to honor the recovery crews, a garden and several sculptures were constructed, two walls were erected, a support wall was made and a museum was created. It was so incredibly healing to simply remember. I now understand the importance of memorials and simply remembering.

And so tonight, I remember Joplin and Oklahoma in Texas and in the HEAT!!!! Today we felt a high of 106!!! Yikes! Yes, we've made it to the Lone Star State and it is hot!!! It's amazing how much the landscape has changed so! Oklahoma was quite lush but as we moved further south, the land became increasingly barren and HOTTER. Bunches of trees are scattered here and there, small dry bushes are dotted on the brown ground and the air is dryer. We are most definitely approaching the southwest desert :)

Next on the map, New Mexico!
